Adaptive Optics (AO) has become a strategic asset for modern defense systems. By correcting atmospheric and environmental disturbances in real time, AO enhances image quality, communication stability, and detection capabilities across land, sea, air, and space domains.

 

Adaptive Optics supports several key defense applications :

  • For optical communication links, adaptive optics improves beam quality, reduces scintillation and maintains stable, secure and high-speed data transmission between mobile and distant platforms.
  • In surveillance and observation systems, it sharpens long‑range electro‑optical and infrared imagery by increasing resolution and clarity, enabling better detection, identification, and tracking in complex operational environments.
  • Adaptive Optics is also used in SSA – space situational awareness, for more accurate monitoring of satellites nd orbital debris.

To support the development of these advanced optical systems, Bertin Alpao provides a wide range of compact deformable mirrors, designed for integration into constrained environments , as well as wavefront-sensors and real time controllers.
